Bottom filter drain cover, something smaller possible?

I've noticed this summer that my poor roboto will try and run over the bottom pool filter grate and sometimes gets stuck.

For next season, can I switch it out for something that isn't as tall?

Virtually all single main-drain covers now have that, or a similar, profile. They are designed to meet Virginia-Graham-Baker safety standards as to being considered un-blockable. You could try something like the Paramount SDX Retro Fit that has an adapter plate to use the existing screw holes in you pool drain sump and might have a different enough profile that a cleaner can go over it.
