Blowing Out Lines Question

Everything I've read says to turn your filter to recirculate before blowing out your lines. I can't get air to build up in the lines with the filter position on recirculate, but when it is on filter, it works beautifully. What am I doing wrong? Is there a chance I am doing damage with it being on filter? Thanks!

You can blow it out on the filter setting with no problem and it doesn't hurt the filter. I used to blow out all the time on filter and then I read to use recirculate so I tried that. No difference. On recirculate the air just doesn't go through the filter.

On filter, after you blow and plug the lines, open the drain valve on the bottom of the filter and the air in the filter will help push out the water. This will not happen on recirculate, instead you depend on gravity to drain the filter.

Thank you samt! Do you know why it will not work on recirculate for me?

It may be a damaged multiport gasket that's is not sealing properly. You can check if that's the problem by putting your hand over the back wash hose end while your pushing air through the lines on recirculate.

If you do feel air with your hand you will need to replace the gasket, which is easy to do.

One of the spokes on the gasket may be blown and your losing air out the backwash hose.

Thanks, I had a feeling I was going to have to replace that in the spring because my handle is extremely hard to turn. When I took it apart to look at it I could tell it was looking worn. Any idea on how often this part has to be replaced?

If you have a SP714T top mount multiport, you might need part number SPX0714CA or you could get part number SPX0714BA. First disassemble and check spoke gasket. Clean and lubricate if gasket is good.

I replaced one about 5 yrs ago and it's still going strong and easy to work. When I installed it, I lubed it with plumbers grease that had silicone in it.

I also read yrs ago to only turn the multiport valve in one direction, so I only turn mine clockwise. I guess turning it back and forth will shorten the life of the gasket from what I remember. I think just regular maintenance with silicone to keep the gasket from drying out and friction free is probably the way to go. I wouldn't buy 2 gaskets and have one as a spare, the spare may just rot before you need it.

I had read that a few years back, and I also turn mine clockwise. Thanks that was what I was looking for, whether or not to buy a spare while I was ordering.
