How long do you keep the pump running? What schedule? Do I need vacuum running? If yes how many hours each day? Can someone point me to either an old thread or give some ideas? I'm keeping pool chemicals under control but not sure about general pool care.

Many people with variable speed pumps run them 24/7, the schedule depends on the pool. Basically you want to run at a speed that skims the water to remove debris and keep the water circulating enough to prevent algae. Each pool is different an you will eventually learn what works best for your pool and it does change throughout the year. You should run the cleaner/vacuum once or twice a week.
I am currently running my pool at 1300 RPM 24/7. We are about at the end of the season up here, swimming will be done this week or next and I will be winterizing it in about a month.
