NOTE: This question is NOT in reference to my pool (linked in my profile). I’m helping out family in IL & their pool & temperature/environment is different from ours so want to make sure I’m leading them in the right direction - trying to get them up and running with Pool Math & TFP.

Pool is ~30K gallons, vinyl with SWG. Ran thru tests today (using Taylor test kit), here are their #s:

FC: 10
CC: 0
pH: 8.5
TA: 130
CYA: 20 (probably lower)
CH: 80

Pool Math recommends adding muriatic acid to lower the pH and then aerate (they have a fountain) to lower TA - comfortable/familiar with that.

Their CYA is probably lower than 20 but the test tube only goes down to 30 but the black dot is still very visible. My understanding is that CYA protects free chlorine, so if they have virtually no CYA, their FC shouldn’t be this high? They have been arbitrarily adding 1-2 gallons of shock every weekend so I’m sure that’s why their FC remains high. Pool Math has the target CYA for their pool at 75. Is that too high? I thought it was supposed to be ~50 for a saltwater pool? Don’t know how much their environment (cooler weather) & fact that it’s a vinyl pool make a difference?

We were planning to add muriatic acid to bring down the pH but wanted a gut check before adding stabilizer to increase CYA. Thoughts?
