Back Washing and Rinsing my Pool

My salt water pool is in its morning filtering mode with the pump on visa my techs scheduling. Can I interrupt the system to back wash my pool and rinse and if so do I need to stop the pump to switch the dial lever to back wash or does this need to ne done out of cycle when the pump is
off and I turn it on for this task alone?

What automation do you have?

When you want to backwash, always turn the pump off before moving the handle.
Turn the pump off. Move the handle to backwash. Turn the pump on. When done with backwash, turn the pump off. Move the handle to rinse, Pump on, pump off. Move the handle to filter. Pump on.

Thank you for your information and instructions. That was what I thought I needed to do with my Blue Haven operational system. Would you usually do this by interrupting a 4 hour filtering cycle. Or should this be done when there is no re-circulation or filtering going on - when the system is quiet and nothing is running?
