AZ Dust Storms

Use a net to get out any of the leaves and other debris - then do a good brushing. I'd also suggest doing an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test tonight.

Post up a full set of current test results. What test kit are you using? Add it to your signature....

Enrico what kind of pump? Single speed, two speed, or VS??

Let in run another day and if it’s not significantly clearer by tomorrow, somethings going on.

It’s looking much better today actually. Not sure why my signature doesn’t show up when I respond from my phone but I do have a full signature with my pool details typically but I’ll post here anyway

IG Plaster Pool. 11,000 gallons. Hayward Cartridge Filter. Pentair WhisperFlo Pump Single Speed. TF100

Getting much better. Haven’t run test yet today but will shortly and vacuum again to remove more of the dust

Cool looks good. What is your CC?

0.

To be honest it’s clear up until the near bottom where some dust is still hanging tight. I’m in it now haha.

I think my cartridge filters have seen better days and it’s not catching everything it should. I bought the house in 2017 and have cleaned the filters (4) regularly but they’re from the previous owners and don’t know when they were last replaced.

I have struggled with a higher CYA since I purchased and am draining in October to start fresh and clean.

Actually Enrico, your CYA is not bad. I was at 80 back in April, and I’m down to 60 now from oxidation. You’ll probably finish out the summer at 60, which is fine for the Desert. I wouldn’t bother with the water change unless it bothers you that much. If you do do it, you want daytime temperatures to be under 80 so your plaster will be safe to be exposed. So Dec-Feb is the best time for the drain/refill. Keep in mind though, depending on what town you’re in, check with your water company to see when they set sewer rates for the year. I’m over in Chandler and they just have a flat rate for sewer, so no worries if you live there.

So your numbers are all good, so then the next culprit is like you said, the cartridges are most likely shot. We have the same size pool, and I have a Hayward with 4 cartridges as well, and my pool was back to normal the next day. And I didn’t run my pump anywhere near as long as you did.
I’ve only cleaned my filters once since new (nov) and they really didn’t need it then. (I was just curious)
Do you use hairnets on your skimmer basket? If not, you really should as it helps with the dust we have here. Also I noticed you don’t have a canister filter on your Kreepy Krauly hose, you should look into one of those as well. Everything that it sucks up, goes straight to your cartridges. The more you can grab before it gets there, the less you have to tear that puppy apart to clean it.

We have set sewer rates here in maricopa. I want to start fresh with water soon and be a bit lower of CYA

I used to have a lead canister but it was outside for a weekend and it melted the plastic. I used to have skimmer socks on the skimmer basket and the one inside the leaf canister it made a huge difference last year. But Yes time for new cartridges though for sure and skimmer socks or hair nets need to go back on and a new leaf canister !

I wouldn't be in a big rush to drain. Maybe wait until late February if you are intent on draining. The CYA will drop a little each month (maybe about 5ppm/month). Your bigger possible concern is your CSI at +0.25. With our hard water, scaling can become an issue as the CH rises. You can manage the pool with CH levels up to 1000-1200 by maintaining the TA and pH a bit lower. Look at PoolMath and enter a TA of 60 while maintaining all your other present numbers - what would that make your CSI? Try to keep the CSI slightly negative (0 to -0.30) to minimize scaling and calcium buildup.

What is the CH and TA of your fill water?
