My auto cover sheared a bolt but i am unsure if previous owners had it jerry rigged or what i need to do. Is there a special hardware piece to fit both sides of these holes? When i wedge a bolt in there the cover opens and closes. When it falls out it just spins the shaft so i know something needs to be in there. The hole is not threaded and does not go all the way through. May be the bolt the busted and stuck or could be the shaft. I dont know. Anyone have a gear like this they can compare it to?

What brand and model is your cover?
Are you sure that the hole doesn't go all the way thru and the old bolt isn't just sheared off and still in the shaft?
If it's a Cover-Pools Safe-T Cover or similar, the parts diagram shows the pawl with a bolt all the through it and a nylock nut on the opposite side. The part numbers are shown as L-160005 or R-160006 for the pawl sleeve and the bolt as 080023 & nut 080065.

The hole goes all the way through. It's a 1/4" x 1.5" stainless steel shear pin.
Use a 1/4" pin punch and punch out the bolt from the open side of the hole. Then, tap in the 1/4" shear pin until it comes through the other side such that the pin is evenly spaced in the hole on both sides.
The cover might be binding. The pin is designed to break/shear when the cover binds to protect the rope.
Be careful not to overstress the cover because the rope can break.
If the cover is binding, fix that before trying to move it with the motor.
When punching out the old bolt, you might want to use a 7/32" pin punch since the hole is exactly 1/4" and the punch can get stuck in the hole.

The cover was just replaced last year so thinking the damage was done when old cover was on. We only used it a handful of times this year and did not bind at all. I am unsure of model but here is a picture of set up. I will try tapping it out but did it briefly and it did not budge but i stopped wondering if it was the shaft i was hitting.
