Attached Spa, Filter or Recirculate

New pool owner. I've got an attached Spa. When I want to heat the spa, I simply move the two way valves for supply and return from "pool" to "spa" and turn on the heater. Spa heats up with some spillover into the pool and everything seems great. A friend of mine has a similar set-up and every time he heats the spa he moves his MPV to "Recirculate". I guess the thinking being that it's not good for the filter to have the hot water circulating through it, and that it might heat up faster. I haven't found anything saying hot water is bad for the filter and I think this is probably an unnecessary step.
Any opinions here?

I a not sure if I am reading your question correctly. When I am in spa mode , my spa is recirculating the spa water to heat up faster, and use less energy to keep it hot. Now if you pulled in cooler pool water to heat spa and it spilled over back into the pool I would think it would take longer to heat spa and heater would constantly be on. I have had my pool 4 years now and hot water has not caused any issues with filter.

js,

I suspect he is going to recirculate so that he has more flow out of this spa jets by not having the filter in the way... I can't see where hot water is going to make any difference one way or the other..

Thanks,

Jim R.
