aqualink RS replacement options

My basic question is there are many models and firmware revs of aqualink RS control boards,
- how are they interchangeable?
- has anyone interchanged one? like going from an RS4 to an RS8

I have a RS4 P&S running 8158 L
I would like to move to an RS8 P&S running "R" or better for wifi control. It seems like the RS8 just is a more advanced board with more controls then the R4, all the connectors seem to match up.

please advise, I'm happy to be pointed elsewhere but it has been very confusing searching this topic so far.

All you need is the correct board. Usually you can get it from eBay. Here's one I found with my first search. They take 10 minutes to replace. Everything you have now should work with the new board unless it's super old.

FYI Look online for the instructions for replacing the board. You are supposed to document everything first like what aux port is attached to what and so on. Every bit of programming will have to be redone with the new board.
