Retirement has come and the kid is off to college. Time for us to enjoy life!

A move (from NC) is in our near future and we’re considering when we want to go. Choice #1 is an area close to (1 mile?) or on the Gulf coast (maybe between Gulf Shores, AL and Panama City Beach, FL).

Priority is a neighborhood of “good people” who enjoy socializing - whether it’s in the backyard, culdesac, or neighborhood clubhouse.

Being around Pensacola, surely there are pockets of military retirees like us?

Price point under $400k’ish (depending on annual HOA or club dues).

Any suggestions of an area, city, town, neighborhood, to check out (or ones to avoid) appreciated!

My sister lives in Milton. I have been there a few times. Navarre beach is great and the area overall is very nice.

I snowbirded at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores for a couple of years. In the winter it is paradise. But come late March/April and into the summer, the whole region is a tourist traffic mess. A 10 min drive to Target or CVS will turn into an hour, easily. I love the area, but will stay north for the summer.....

The Gulf Shores of 25 years ago is precisely what we’re looking for. Since you’re now staying north for summers, I guess that means you haven’t found its equivalent?

I am in Tallahassee, FL so not really that close to the beach. It takes us about an hour to get to a "beach".
I don’t have to be able to see the water, but I do want to be able to smell the salt air. Do let me know if you have any suggestions on towns we might want to check out. (I’ll swing by and drop off your next salt cell or a few gal of LC!) 😉

I would suggest that you all take a road trip during peak season (which is coming up) and get a lay of the land. Have a little shopping list of homes/ neighborhoods/areas to hit up along the way that meet your criteria.
98 is a madhouse during peak season so an area that doesn’t require you to use that to aquire the goods of daily life may fit the bill but still be a close trip to the beach.
There are many outskirts neighborhoods that border wildlife areas/lakes/golf courses so there’s more to do than just the beach.
