Friends,

(first time pool owner and a bit overwhelmed here )
Found what I think is black algae (did the scrape test onto white paper and it was greenish) I have a vinyl pool built in 2004 I believe. I know they say there shouldn't be BA in a vinyl pool, but there are wrinkles and sm divots in the liner (not sure what is under the liner) that I believe are catching the BA. Shocked and brushed for several days to get most of the spots gone, but there are some in the deep end that just won't come up. Realized this week that my SWG was not working properly so I took it apart and sure enough it was pretty gunked up, cleaned it with muriatic acid and it began working again. My numbers before cleaning:
FC 0
CC 0
PH 7.4
TA 125
CH 450
CYA didn't register with reagent test
Salt 2520
Later did the FAS-DPD with FC .5 and CC .5

Put the SWG on 100% overnight to up my Cl, my numbers this am were:
FC 3.5 (used the FAS-DPD test on FC and CC)
CC .5
PH 7.6
TA 125
CH 425
CYA 30 (filled the sm tube with all the liquid)
Salt 2720

Upon cleaning and restarting the SWG last night the Salt light was green so perhaps with the boost overnight that depleted my salt level to make the red light become solid on my SWG reading for SALT again. The Flow and Cell lights are all green. So I'm not sure if it is saying I need more salt or that there is an issue with the cell.

I think I need to SLAM to get rid of whatever algae is there, is that correct? Also, thoughts on the solid red light on my SWG? Thank you for any help you can give!

Welcome to TFP.

Before you go down the road thinking you have black algae, which I doubt, you need to properly follow our SLAM Process that clears algae. Your shocking and using your SWG does not accomplish what the SLAM Process and liquid chlorine does.

Your K-2005 test kit cannot test FC over 5ppm. You need the FAS/DPD chlorine test for the SLAM Process. See Pool Test Kits - Further Reading

What model SWG do you have?
