Am I missing something on CYA and chems? Tips welcome

15k pool with spa in Austin, TX

Moved to Austin a little over 10 years ago. Bought a house, built a pool, and then had to re-learn much of what I knew about pool mgmt to deal with a southern pool that never closes (grew up taking care of a pool but lived in the NE).

The biggest challenge has always been managing CYA. I started with pucks alone (LC for shock), then switched to LC full time, then switched back when LC prices went through the roof a few years back. Dumping water here in Austin is super expensive. I've now settled into a routine where I use pucks until the CYA maxes, switch over to liquid until the CYA crashes, and then switch back to pucks. Rinse, wash, repeat.

I speak with friends about pools every now and then, most of whom use pool management guys/companies. When I ask them how they deal with CYA they often have no idea what I'm talking about. When my people come over they sometimes comment about how they like my pool because it seems to have less chlorine, at least when my CYA is down.

So, the question is are how do other people deal with CYA (aside from dumping water)? Am I missing a trick or something in terms of my chem routine? Would love any insight from the TPG community.

Thanks,
Rick

Could you research a source of liquid chlorine in higher volume? Poolstored recommended a salt water chlorine generator (SWG). Theoretically you are buying your chlorine upfront with one. Many TFPers have done the math and factored in what they buy in liquid chlorine and/or pucks and end the long run the SWG saves money.

SWG all the way. Our pools in AU never close for winter, they just get too cold to swim in and everything slows down. I run my CyA at 70ppm through summer and let it drop to 50ppm through winter. I add CyA as required, no pucks or shock required.
