Hello! this set up is new to me and looking for advice. I thought the Fill line on my pool was inoperable until I found this on the side of my house in a half busted state.

I manually opened the valve and it does send water to the pool, although there are leaks so I need rebuild it. I would like to fix this up and maybe just hook it up to an irrigation timer?

Is this a bad idea? Any advice on what to do or not to do? I get quite a bit of evaporation in my pool so this would save me from having to drag the hose out every week and top it off.

Thanks!

No, not a bad idea. Just be prepared for all the algae in that pipe to come out and dump into the pool. May need to SLAM after that.

I'd keep a winter plug in it while it's worked on and before the new valve I'd pour raw chlorine through the pipe to burn off as much as possible and even possibly catch it in a 5 gallon bucket somehow rigged hanging under it.
