I essentially have a rectangular inground pool, with a rectangular spillover spa (cool deck on the patio, marcite in the pool). As the pool is now 24 years old, we are looking at renovating and are having companies come out for estimates. A company came out yesterday and proposed adding a swim shelf at the shallow end side which could accommodate 2 lounge chairs, and also could add a bubbler by running a supply line back to the equipment pad. This would require cutting a large section out of the patio, forming, pouring, etc, as this would not be added within the existing pool original concrete pour. We though it was a great idea. They even sent some CAD renderings over today, and it looked very nice.

A second pool company came out a few hours later, and we proposed the same idea. He basically said it is possible, but essentially said not to do it. He said there is a pretty big risk of cold joints below the waterline where the old pour meets the new.

Does anyone have experience with this? Which company is correct?

Rebar and shotcrete need to be used to form the new section, not concrete mixed on-site or from a truck.

If done properly with sufficient rebar epoxied into the old shell and connecting the new section, then cold joints should not be a problem. The devil is in the details.
