Advice for coping repair / what mortar to use

Hi All,

Every few years because of the northeast winters we have some tiles come loose, and this year we lost three pieces of coping as well. I tapped around and removed any that sounded hollow underneath, then some additional pieces to make the repair areas contiguous. I’m left with one section on either side of a swim out to repair. I’ve already chiseled away all the mortar from off/between the coping pieces since taking these photos and have the following questions:

1: What should I use to seal these coping blocks back into place? Can it be the same thing used for between the pieces?

2. Can anyone identify what is used for between the coping pieces? I would like the repair area to match everything else, and I’ve lost touch with the builder. (The white paper in the photos was for white balancing)

3. Should I remove any material from the ground itself or can I seal these back into place onto what I currently have?

Thanks in advance!

Full resolution photos of both areas are below in the attachments but here’s a combo preview:

Welcome to TFP.

1: What should I use to seal these coping blocks back into place?

Type S mortar

Can it be the same thing used for between the pieces?

yes

2. Can anyone identify what is used for between the coping pieces? I would like the repair area to match everything else, and I’ve lost touch with the builder. (The white paper in the photos was for white balancing)

Type S mortar

3. Should I remove any material from the ground itself or can I seal these back into place onto what I currently have?

Chip as much of it out as you can. Use a power tool to help.

Float a tarp on the water where you are working to catch debris that falls into the pool.

You need to be able to create a bed of mortar to lay the stone on and without removing the existing you will have trouble keeping the stones level to the existing stones and deck.
