I need to clean my cartridge filter and then I was going to add CYA for the season. Since CYA works by getting stuck in the filter, could you just add it mixed in a bucket of water to the open filter housing?? Anyone try this? Am I crazy? I need to do around 5lbs of CYA...

You can. It may take quite some time for it to dissolve. You also might find some of it in the bottom of the filter housing when you next clean your filters.

It'd be simpler to pour it into an old sock or a nylon and set it in the skimmer -- don't block all the flow -- or hang it in front of a return. Then you will know when it is all dissolved. Pouring down the skimmer or even directly into the filter won't let you do that.
