Today I added Borate (Mule Team Borax) to my ABG 8600Gallon pool. First of all, my water balance was good. TA, pH and Free Chlorine were all within range.
I started out by reading the post dated 4/26/2008. My wife stocked up on the Borax from the local grocery and I purchased 4 gallons of Champion Acid Blue from Amazon assuming it was full strength 31.45% Muriatic Acid. I premixed my borax in a bucket of water and added about 1/4 of the required amount, then I did the same with the Acid Blue. I followed this, until the suggested levels were in the pool. Later I checked my pH and it was very high, after adding more Acid Blue and then more Acid Blue and then even more Acid Blue, I decided to search Acid Blue in the forums. I found out that it is a buffered Muriatic Acid and I will need about twice the amount. Which is just about 100% correct. After a short panic, I'm happy to say my pool has Borates in it and the water is balanced.
The reason I write this post, is that I wish the Pool Calculator would incorporate a drop down window for Acid Blue as it does with Borax etc. I hope that is something that will come about in the future.
Enjoy the summer everyone, and don't panic about water balance, just check here first. This site is full of invaluable information.

Until you mentioned that product I'd never heard of the brand. We advise people to use basic Muriatic Acid, and there is an option to choose the half strength acid. Brands don't matter. Choose the chemical and strength that you're using. Don't buy combination products .

Thanks for the info. I searched for the MSDS and found one from Horizon Pool Supply. The MSDS sheet show under the category of Composition and information on ingredients it is Hydrochloric acid and Weight % is between 30-40% further down it shows weight 32%

Your first clue it was buffered acid was it was shipped and sold by Amazon.

They only places locally I have ever found full strength acid have old hardware stores and professional paint shops. If I ever went to a pool store it would probably be there too.

The good acid is a shipping and storage Hazzard not a lot of people want to deal with it.

Next time you do borates go with boric acid which you can get on Amazon. It the borates and acid combined into a user friendly powder.
