Added Alkalinity up and pool turned green

Hi all, my wife went to a pool store with a water sample and was told that the alkalinity was too low. So they recommended some alkalinity up which my son dumped into the pool and the pool turned green? What are we missing? Why would the water turn green just from adding glorified baking soda? The water was clear before this happened.

Hi, welcome to TFP! No, the water should not turn green just from increased alkalinity. Did the water immediately turn green or was it a day or so later? Can you post a complete set of test results?

It's possible that there is Iron or Copper in the water and the increased alkalinity drove the pH up and made the metals precipitate.

What's the pH now?

Have you ever used any pool products with "blue" in the name? How about copper-based algaecides?

And as others mentioned, is is a cloudy green or a nice clear emerald green?
