Used a bag of Clorox Salt last month and within a week, had staining on the pool steps, walls, and floor. Pool was stable with readings of FC 4.5 - 5, CYA 70, TA 70, PH 7.2

7/18 I added 4.6 oz of AA and then 3.4 oz AA after stains were slight. Added 2 bottles of Jack's Purple and left the filter on 24/7. Incremental additions of chlorine/Jack's Purple. It's now been 7 days of filter running 24/7.

7/25 Readings:

TC 2.5
CYA 75
TA 70
PH 7.2
Temp: 83
SWG: upped to 50% (increased 10% each day) and constant increases in chlorine

Still finding light staining on stairs. Have now used 4 (32 oz) bottles of Jack's Purple Magic.

Suggestions?

Jack's Purple Magic - Continuous additions

AA treatment followed by slow rise in chlorine - have now used 4 bottles of Jack's Purple Magic (AA treatment was 8 oz for 21,100K pool). Is that an unusual amount? Staining was never heavy to start with but keeps reappearing on steps. My long saga post of utter frustration did not garner any responses.

One week of 24/7 filter, chlorine additions, and 16 oz additions of Jack's since initial 64 oz after AA.

Am I beating a dead horse here?

Really need some guidance.

SWG: set to 50% as of this a.m. - increased 10% daily

I merged your 2 related threads and moved it to Testing area to maybe get more eyes. jblizzle

The first step is to find out what type of stains you have. Do you have a picture you can post? What color are the stains? Are you on a well?

Metal stains respond to Ascorbic Acid. The best way is to take a handful of Vitamin C tablets, crush them up and put in a sock. Put the sock on the stain and leave there for a bit. If the Vit C tabs remove or lighten the stain, then it's metals. If not, it's likely an organic stain or calcium scale depending on the color.

You have a SWG, do you have any trichlor tabs? If so, you can place a tab on the stain and leave there for a bit. If the tab remove or lighten the stain, then it's organic.

What is your CH?

FYI, your FC is too low for your CYA. Are you following the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]?

Definitely metal - last year did the AA treatment with great success! No issue since opening the pool this year in May - actually, best ever following TFP protocols. All fine
till adding the one bag of Clorox salt and then within a week, stain started to appear so I tested with a little AA and it went away. I followed Pool School AA Treatment process. I know FC is too low - yes, using chart for a minimum of 3 to rebalance the water per AA treatment instructions - been slowly adding chlorine to get to 3 - but continues to drop .5. Slowly increasing SWG daily - today at 50%.

Have not tested CH - will do so and post. Water is sparkly clear. Yes, on a well and when we add water, we filter through polyfill and do catch some debris, but had not done any additions prior to starting the AA treatment.

Mostly curious if using 4 plus bottles of Purple Magic seems excessive based on AA treatment of only 8 oz of ascorbic acid.

Thanks!

Much thanks, Jblizzle!

Tested my CH - it's at 50. Last year was the same! FC now at 3 - will retest in hour to see if holding. SWG on 50% all day. Can I turn off my filter tonight - been 24/7 since July 20 AA treatment. Typo above that it started on July 18 - sorry! Pool remains clear - no cloudiness!
