Just realized I've been on here for a while and never posted this in the "Introduce Yourself Forum"!
The house my family bought in SoCal in 1966 had a pool and it was the only one on the block for a few years so we became the place to swim! After we lived there for a few years my dad, who was meticulous about maintaining the pool even though he never had one before, let me start maintaining it. This pool had no heater, a stainless steel DE filter and a pump. Of course TFP didn't exist so my dad read and read and talked with the pool store guys on what to do. There was no pool store that starts with an "L" and the family owned pool store was there to help not to sell something you didn't need. There was no such thing as Conditioner (CyA) early on either and even when it became available in the mid 70's my dad didn't consider it valuable. We tested the Chorine and Acid (My dad's term for pH) levels with a simple drop tester just like the one in kits today nearly every day and we added chlorine daily, Muriatic Acid occasionally. Never once was that pool green or even close! I learned pool maintenance at a very young age and even after several decades of not having one myself it was a no-brainer for me when we finally bought a house with a pool and a couple of years ago bought one without a pool so we built one. Thanks to TFP and the peeps on here for providing this valuable information and education on the CyA/FC relationship. You teach what I sorta already knew and a few more things that make maintaining a pool a joy not a chore. I see so many people I know struggle and I try to tell them the way but sometimes it's hard to get through so I just let it go after once or twice.
