A few pucks here and there....

Big time TFP follower, so I watch my chem's like a hawk and certainly know that pucks are NOT the way to maintain a pool.

However, there are times when the occasional puck use seems perfectly acceptable (i.e. SWG not up yet due to cold water, heading out of town for a few days).

Made me wonder exactly what are the negatives of the occasional puck use? The pucks are adding a little extra stabilizer? What else in these limited use scenarios.

None. Just use plain pucks, no copper.

I add a couple to a floater if we are leaving in the summer for over a week. They add enough acid to keep the pH in check.

Then you know the rules

1) know where you are
2) know where you want to be
3) know what you are adding
4) know what it will do
5) pat yourself on the back when it does

Have at it. :)

I read here than an 8 oz tablet will raise your FC by roughly 2 ppm and your CYA by about 1 - 1.5 ppm in a 25,000ish gal pool. So if you can spare the additional stabilizer in your pool, then the occasional puck is fine

Before I had a SWCG I used pucks whenever I went on vacation. The pucks would raise my CYA a few points, and then before my next vacation my CYA would be lowered by rain and lower and fill at closing/opening so that I could do it all over again.

There is nothing inherently "bad" about pucks, it is just knowing that they are more than one chemical, and what impact they will have on your water chemistry.
