A&A Magnasweep - replacement of gears on Water Valve assembly

Does anyone have experience replacing just the gears on the water valve assembly? The teeth on the underside of a couple gears have worn off and the unit no longer rotates. I'd rather just spend the $40 on new gears rather than the $100 on a new unit if possible.

On my similar (identical?) setup, you simply pop off the spring washers on top of each gear with a screwdriver (or 2). New spring washers are provided with the gear sets...although at one time they provided fewer spring washers than gears. In that case, do about every other one as you build back up and make sure you have one for the top. I have reused those spring washers on occasion.

The gears on my unit are all identical, you don’t have to worry about which goes where, and you already have a good picture for rebuilding. Don’t try to pick and choose which ones to replace, get the whole set. If you are the original owner, the gears should be covered under the lifetime warranty.

also, I cant remember if there are washers (not the spring washers to hold them in place) under each gear to help with wear. If there are, don’t forget to put those in as well. They would come with the gear set if they are needed. I end up replacing these gears roughly every 4-5 years.

By the way, while you are in that gear box, I recommend you set the adjustment (if you have it) to maximize the speed at which the popups rotate through each zone. That’s the most effective. I think that mechanism is in the top dome.

Does your gearset have one or two gears that make contact with the lower housing of the water valve? If only one, you may be better served by replacing the entire gearset to the newer design with the two opposing gears contacting the lower water valve housing. On mine, the gearset has lasted 4 times longer.

Is your water valve a 5 port or 6 port unit? Not all gears may have a retaining clip on the shaft - by design.
Link not an endorsement of the company - provided for reference only.

Are you the original owner of the pool?
