After reading many posts about main drains,is there any harm in closing the main drains for any length of time ? Should they be left open most or all of the time?
open them periodically so that the water within those lines doesnt go stagnant, but other than that you should have no problem as long as your water at the time you close them is balanced. Even if its not, pvc pipe is pretty resistent to low PH and the like. Just make sure that you still properly winterize them.
With a Polaris vacuum it is usually better to keep the main drains mostly or totally closed. The Polaris will take care of the bottom, and the skimmers will get better flow with the Main drains closed. Open them periodically to keep them clean.
