Cutting quartzite

I have an elevated spa with a waterfall into the pool. The waterfall is made of stacked and mortared quartzite ( I believe this is the material, but I'm not a geologist).

One of the tiles at the top was missing when we moved in. There are some leftover shards of quartzite that I am going to try to hew into the right shape, and then re mortar in place.

All of the existing tiles look rough-hewn, ie the edges look fairly rough, definitely not cut with a tile saw.

Is there a tried and true method for cracking quartzite? It is roughly 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Hammer and chisel?
