Conflicting CYA Advice

pH in the 7.2-7.4 range is usually easier on the eyes but pH can also be a personal thing where you find a level you like and try to maintain it.

Looks like you need to measure out some stabilizer and toss it in a sock in front of a return or in the skimmer and then just wait a week to retest. See CYA - > http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/123-abc-of-pool-water-chemistry
During that week you should use your target CYA level until you physically test in a week.

I had a can of Sodium Hypochlorite (12.5%) left over from last seasons swamp disaster. I used Poolmath and added 96oz of it, which should get me to around 5ppm FC. I also gradually added 38oz of Stabilizer into the skimmer (to get me to 50 ppm) and have the filter running all night. I realize that I will not see the full CYA effect until I get back from travelling later in the week. The CYA chart says I should be in the 60-70 range, but as I'm new to this I'll add that next weekend when I see what the new test results show later this week. I'm leaving Sunday please let me know if I've missed anything. Many THANKS!:swim:

It's a better idea to add the stabilizer to a sock and stick it in the skimmer or in front of a return jet. Two concerns with pouring it into the skimmer. One is it clogs someplace and the second is you're sending all that granular stuff right into your plastic impeller in the pump.

In the instructions in Pool School they talk about adding CYA with a sock - > http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/123-abc-of-pool-water-chemistry

Also, if you add it to the skimmer then you should run the pump 24/7 or else the water in the skimmer will become quite saturated with CYA when the pump is off. Probably not as much of a concern with CYA as opposed to people who put trichlor pucks in their skimmers but I like hanging in front of a return much better.

By the way, does it have to be a pink sock or will any old color do :p

Thanks for the advice about the sock trick. Will go out and buy a pair of pink ones asap! :D I re-tested my FC and it's up around 7 so the Sodium Hypochlorite did the business and the CYA has climbed into the high 40's. Even though my pool looked pretty clear, I do notice today that the clarity is brighter and sharper than before. I also found a pool store that tests pool water using similar tests as the TF-100 and stocks some of the replacement agents and re-agents for the kit, what a day! Thanks again for all the help.
