My pump works fine in pool mode but sucks air in spa mode, so much that the heater will just cycle on and off. I've lubed the pump basket O-ring and replaced the Jandy O-rings. I'm thinking I must have a leak somewhere on the spa suction return line. What is the best method to pinpoint the leak?

It is simply detective work. Start at the spa and work backwards towards the pump through every joint, connection and any other possible air leak source and you will find it. It's often time consuming but there really is no alternative.
