flow rates

I was reading on the site poolplaza.com and they have a section on pump sizing. They say "For each 1.5 inch intake line, the maximum flow into the pump will be 42 gallons per minute (GPM)". so my flow will be less. Does this mean that a large filter will just be more efficient.

That "rule" is not true in any meaningful sense. The flow rate will be whatever it actually is, which is hopefully less that 42 GPM, but could easily be higher than 42 GPM, depending on the size of your pump and the length and complexity of your plumbing system.

Calculating your actual flow rate is quite complex, and not normally worth the effort.
