losing water to waste when pump off?

Hi Y'all, So I added floc, ran pump for an hour, turned it off and set multi to waste(pump off). hooked up hose to fill because in morning I am vac to waste. 9 hour later I expect pool to be fully overfilled but found it 6-8" lower than when I shut pump off and set valve to waste, its 3" below strainer. Question is did weight of water force pool water drain through bottom through pump and to waste with pump off? sounds like it could but not sure and a bit worried. I have not been losing water at all this season.

It sounds like your waste line is likely hard plumbed and goes to a point below the pool level, in effect you set up a siphon.
