Your eyes are about 7.4 - so if your pool is 7.4 that will be most comfortable.
Think of it on the extremes. A pH below 7.0 is acidic. Pouring lemon juice in your eye hurts.
A pH above 7.0 is basic. Getting lye in your eye really really really hurts (and blinds you)
Bases are just as reactive as acids. People tend to have a better image of acid - it burns, it eats things away, etc etc. A strong base is just as destructive.
Aside from hurting your eyes, strong bases convert lipids (fats) into soap. You would get all slippery like
My pool water tends to be a little high on pH (Not bad, but with high pH fill water and high pH dust that gets blown into the pool, it tends to be around 7.6). I wear goggles.
