I had a solar system installed back in 2007 and the installer placed the vacuum relief valve way up high just below the roof (on the pipe just before they turned onto the roof itself to connect to the solar panels).

A few days ago, a friend had the same company install a system on her pool. The relief valve was placed near the equipment (haven't seen it, but she told me it's right near the top of the filter where the pipes divert the flow to the solar panels).

Is there an optimum location for the relief valve?

There are advantages and disadvantages of both locations ... both should work though. Others put the VRV at the very highest point of the solar system.

Having it low makes it easier for the pump to close the valve, but when the solar is turned off the only place for air to enter the system is at the pad so the panels may not drain as well/easily.
