That means you are getting air in the suction side plumbing somewhere. The most common causes are the water level being too low in the skimmer allowing a vortex to form and air to be drawn in, or the pump strainer basket lid not sealing correctly. The air leak could also be in a plumbing connection or one of the hoses.
Thanks for everyone's support on my question! I figured it all out thanks to the posts. Seems there was a tiny air link in the tubing close to the pump. Used this opportunity to go ahead and add a check valve.
