Little bits floating in the pool

Last season, we were new to our pool. We finally got all of the older equip. running and water sparkly clean...or so we thought. We noticed when swimming with goggles that were all kinds of little things floating in the water. While standing in the water, the pool looked super clear and so clean! But in the water with goggles it was a different story. As we're getting things back up and running, we're wondering if we should fix/replace our filter? Get a pool cleaner? Any suggestions where we could start looking to get rid of the floaties? Or, is that normal?

Some really tiny debris that can only be seen when backlit is very common. Usually you only see them with a pool light at night, but goggles and the correct lighting can reveal them as well.

Okay. That's good to know. How would we know when it's time to replace sand in the filter? We've never even opened it up - no idea of the condition or how long it's been in there.

Sand almost never needs to be replaced, pretty much only if it has become badly scaled. It is a good idea to open up the filter once every couple of years and clean and resettle the sand bed, see this post for a description of that process.
