Cartridge vs DE

I though I should put this in a new thread. I am having to replace my cartridge filter assembly after springing a leak. A friend of mine was over yesterday and told me that after changing from a cartridge to a DE filter, they experienced much clearer water. I'm sure this topic has probably been covered at length, with pros and cons, but I am not having much luck finding a search string that works. Can anyone offer their experience or links to some applicable threads?

DE filters finer than a cartridge which filters finer than sand, but most of the time you can't tell a difference. The one instance where you can is in front of the pool light at night. You'll see less particles with a DE filter than any other type.

I couldn't decide, so I got a Pentair Quad DE, which is both... It's a cartridge filter that uses DE.
