LeafMaster - a poor attempt at a cheap vacuum?

I've used a LeafMaster once in the past and found it to be almost useless. It took forever to setup and didn't pick up many leaves.

Is that down to bad technique or are LeafMasters just a poor attempt at a cheap vacuum?

I don't have the funds to purchase a Hammerhead and so I am looking for alternatives.

They can work extremely well if they are setup correctly and you have a lot of leaves, but they are fairly specialized. I only use one when the bottom of the pool is covered with leaves. There isn't any point in going through the setup for just a couple of leaves and they can't pick up ordinary dirt/dust.
