33% H202(hydrogen peroxide) and Polyquat 60

Hello everyone.

I am new here and I hope someone can help me. I am currently using 33% H202(hydrogen peroxide) in my pool and have heard good things about using Polyquat 60, an algecide with chlorine and bromide. Can anyone help me to understand the Polyquat 60 and how I've read it also helps sustain sanitizer levels in pool water. Also, has anyone used Polyquat 60 with 33%-35% H202(hydrogen peroxide).

Any information would help tremendously.

Thank you

Tony

Are you using the Baquacil system (biguanide + peroxide)?

Peroxide, by itself, is not an EPA approved sanitizer for pools because it’s too unstable and you can not achieve enough of a residual level to meet the CDC required CT kill times for most pathogens of concern.

Polyquat-60 is a polymeric quaternary ammonium algaecide that has long acting algaestatic properties and is more stable against chlorine oxidation. It is also not an EPA approved sanitizer by itself but is considered a secondary sanitizer.

Hydrogen Peroxide is not one of the 3 approved sanitizers in the US ... unless you are actually using Baquacil?
IMO, your pool is not safe for swimming if that is all you are using. That may not be what you asked, but I feel the need to state it.

Why do you want to use Polyquat 60? That is an algaecide to prevent algae, but if your pool was properly sanitized, there would not be a need for it. If you have algae, that is a sign that your pool is not sanitized and safe to prevent disease transmission. The use of Poly 60 to prevent algae would mask that obvious sign.

Welcome to TFP!

I'm afraid you won't find much help here with using peroxide. You would need to be keeping your peroxide levels extremely high to provide oxidation and reliable sanitation, to the point of significant discomfort. Peroxide can be used as an oxidizer at lower, more comfortable levels when used in conjunction with biguanide as a sanitizer, though we generally aren't fans of that system due to cost and ineffectiveness experienced by most users over time.

Polyquat is our algaecide of choice, but really only for times when chlorine levels are low by necessity due to temporary water treatments and not for regular use. It doesn't really do anything to sustain sanitizer levels, it just helps prevent algae if chlorine levels drop too low to effectively do so itself. Peroxide will oxidize it, but I don't know if it will do so faster than chlorine does.

I wish you luck with your pool, but we do only offer advice on the 3 EPA approved sanitizers: chlorine, bromine, biguanide. Really there is no reason to run a pool using peroxide, chlorine is effective as both a sanitizer and oxidizer at low enough levels to be comfortable, something peroxide cannot provide. While many have had bad experiences with mismanaged chlorine pools, or have been drawn in by dishonest anti-chlorine advertising, a TFPC managed chlorine pool is safe, clear, comfortable, and easy to maintain.
