Pool was filled by 1:00 pm. They're going to get the filter going today. Of course it's raining here now, and predicted to stay at apprx 70 deg for the next 5 days.
Now I need to get the solar racks made so I can get this sucker warm!

The pool is full but it rained most of the day Saturday, today is sunny but the water is 64.4 deg. It was up to 67.1 yesterday even with the poor weather.

(edit) Water temp now at 1:00pm is 66.4 deg.

Almost June and it rained here again today! Weather says showers Wednesday & more rain on Saturday. What the xxxx is up with this weather, oh yea, I put in a pool so it will prob be the coldest/wettest summer on record for Petaluma.

I hear you about this crazy weather. My wife braved going into the pool this morning in spite of the light drizzle. With the partly cloudy weather the past days, the pool only got up to 85ºF from solar when we got home last night and checked it so we put on the gas to get it to the 88ºF that she likes for this morning.

As shown here, Petaluma does get rain in May and even sometimes a small amount in June. Hang in there, we should be seeing our drier summer soon.

The weather is finally looking up a little. They installed the auto cover and diving board on Monday. Yesterday the watertemp went from 64.4 to 68.4 deg. This morning it had dropped to 67.4 so that is a big difference from before the cover was on when it would drop 2 + degrees overnight. I think by this weekend It will be over 70 deg.

Got the large trees thinned to open things up some, It's really nice to be able to see better and have more light penetrate the canopy.

The pool is up to 75 deg now, this week is supposed to be warmer. The cover is doing a great job of retaining the heat. Im surprised that the only the sun on the pool will raise the temp by approx 4 degrees a day, approx 2 are lost at night but there is still a net gain every day. I'm sure it will max out soon but I hope it will get to more than 80 deg first.

I made this tube to hide the wood post and conduit for the cover key.

When the sun is out will the pool warm more with the cover open or closed? I've been opening during the day and closing at night.
The answer depends on whether it's windy or not. If there is little or no wind, then having the pool be open during the day when the sun hits it will tend to warm it up. With a white plaster pool of usual depth, 60% of the sun's energy is absorbed by the water (in your case it might be a little more since I think your depth is 8 feet due to the diving board). There is also heat loss from evaporation but overall you usually have a net gain unless there is wind or the air is very dry (it's not that dry where you live -- relative humidity in the summer is usually around 50-60%).

If you have/get a solar system, then you can generally leave the cover on all the time except when you use the pool (obviously). Solar will heat the pool a lot more than just leaving the cover off. With just a thin cover as you have, you should be able to get the water about 10ºF warmer than the average day/night temperature so around 78ºF or so (that's keeping the cover on all the time). You are hotter now because the weather is unusually warm both during the day and at night and your technique of opening the cover during calm days probably gets the temp up a little more as well. With a more insulating traditional solar cover you can get 15ºF warmer or a little more, so average around 83+ºF this time of year. With solar panels, you can easily get 20-25ºF heat gain depending on the amount of area of panels.
