can't I just drain the pool below the lines in winter?

I usually just run it when its going to get below freezing but their is a leak in one of the return lines above ground at the pump.All the lines are just about 1.5' below the surface.Can't I justdrain the pool below the lines in winter so the pipes dont freeze?Im in Alabama with a vinyl inground.

You can just follow the pool closing instructions in pool school. You'll want to cap your plumbing or you'll need to make sure the water level does not rise above the openings. Also make sure the pipes are blown out properly.

You have to blow them out and seal them, along with the skimmer line. Drain the pump and filter as well.
