Ascorbic acid - how long will it consume chlorine..

If I'm not mistaken, an AA treatment will also use up chlorine. How long will this continue, and can I speed up the process by shocking the pool (if I add more chlorine, will it get rid of the excess AA, now that the stains are gone?)

In particular in this post in that thread I give an amount of chlorine needed to get rid of the ascorbic acid. The reaction is fairly fast so it's not necessary to go to shock levels.
