Coupler on return line?

I was wondering how everyone copes with inground PVC plumbing in regards to being able to get easy access to the inside of the filter.

My return line is basically glued in place so if I ever wanted to remove the multiport valve Id have to do plumbing work. I picked up a 1.5" screw together coupler, but Im weary of using it (more leak points). Figured Id ask if anyone uses something similar around here.

Most people add PVC unions to allow servicing the equipment. It's also handy to have them for winterizing.
