Best way to remove sludge?

As I install my new 3/4hp pump today, I realize that I still have some left over sludge (leaves, mud, debris) in the bottom. I've been hitting this with the long handled leaf rake and skimmer-mounted pool vacuum, which does an alright job. Is there a better method or do I just have to keep doing what I'm doing?

For a couple of inches of debris, scooping with a leaf net is probably the best approach. For somewhat more debris, or if you prefer to spend money, some people have had success with sodium percarbonate (1 lb per 1,000 gallons), which will cause much of the debris to float to the surface where it is easier to skim out.
