So we are putting our reno on hold for the winter. The old plaster has all been removed, and now we're filling the pool until spring. The pump etc has been winterized, but I was told we didn't need to add any chemicals to the water over the winter. Is that true? We are going to drain it in the spring to do the plaster, but I don't want to weaken the gunite (?) walls by minerals leaching out.

Gunite is concrete. Concrete is exposed to the elements all the time. Look at all the concrete water ducts. Your pool will be fine with water in it.
