Every once in a while I get targeted advertisements for pool stuff and some of it makes me laugh.

Last time it was the PhIn pool sensor. Now it’s hexaborates that keep the water clear and ph balanced. All for 39.95 a gallon https://poolproof.com/

Of course I had to know what it was and did a search here. This stuffs been around for a while and without education I guess it will be around for a lot longer.

A lot of these "targeted" ads come from scanning your "cookies" seeing what you have viewed. If you use private browsing mode you will get a lot less targeted ads.

The scary thing was my coworker was talking about something to another person and got a targeted ad for what he was TALKING about.

That’s why I’ll never have Alexa in my home!! The thing is always listening to you.

I get emails from Home Depot asking me to review something I bought in person in the store!!
How do they know what I just bought in person? Your CC!! They track everything now a days. :grrrr:

I think once you start commenting on the ads or even opening the comments, that FB then knows the subject got your attention and will send more of similar things your way.

I was inundated by these adds for power tool sets that were 90% off, all the comments were stating they were scams and that they were not getting their order or getting some knock-off instead. I started just marking them all as SPAM and they went away ... although the message I got from FB was that they were not in violation and they would just stop showing them to me ... so the same scam ads are likely still being shown to other people :hammer: FB and Amazon have gotten to be too big and scams / knock-offs are taking advantage

Ha! We were discussing this phenomenon last Thanksgiving while my large family was sitting around the table (ages 3 to 96). We tried an experiment of mentioning something "internet worthy" to see if it would later show up on someone's phone. Didn't, thankfully. But it was no less freaky that we were even having the discussion about it! And had to think of it as a possibility!! What a world we live in now...

You rather see ads about incontinence products, diet pills or viagra?

Be happy the ads become more relevant to you. Not only does it benefit you, it also keeps many platforms free.

How much of your personal info you share with platforms is up to you of course. But if you check a random Facebook profile, most people are not too concerned :)

You didn't get the ad, because you discussed the topic first and the ad guys exclude people who talk about the subject of voice driven targeting to make sure they aren't detected ;P

p.s. I am in online marketing and use people's info heavily in order to make ads more relevant.

It was like the 3rd post and didn't look at the date :D My bad!
Ahhh, well then I take back much of the smartalec-ness of my response. No, A2D is not active by design. It's where posts go when they devolve from "discussion about pool care" to "explaining to a brick wall why their ideas of pool care are not scientifically sound". Though a few, like this post, are just where people think the topic they have in mind belongs.

So really it's a pretty good sign that it's been so quiet in here lately. Means people have been behaving. Well, that or the mods are throwing most of the misbehaving threads in to the hidden forum instead (essentially deleting them). After nearly a decade on the forum my gut has me leaning towards the latter.
