We just signed a contract a few weeks ago for a new pool. I'm curious if others on this site have to sign "confidentiality" clauses regarding their pricing etc.?

Here is the survey view of our design.

One of the renderings also.

The wood decking is part of the pool build package, and the existing patio will be completely covered with matching travertine. Wet Edge instead of Pebble tech and Vandy equipment. It is also going to be a salt water pool.

I don't have the contract right in front of me to list everything but I will try to update it later.

Currently waiting on HOA approval.

Welcome to TFP! You've come to the right place for all things pool! :lovetfp:
I don't believe our contract had any confidentiality clauses. However, when we were looking at PBs, some wouldn't give us copies of their designs. Maybe someone else more knowledgeable will chime in soon.

Hi Trele6,

Welcome to TFP! Love your design...very unique. Regarding the confidentiality clause; there was nothing in my contract about not disclosing their pricing. It's interesting your PB has that in the agreement. Good luck with your build.

We love the design, there is only really one true change from the rendering shown and that is we removed the three square paver stones near the spa. We loved the look of them, but figured they would be more aesthetic than functional. We also are going to do the landscaping ourselves so that was removed.

Anyone here familiar with this builder by any chance? They are a little hard to search for since U.S. is common and good luck with anything Pool.

We weren't allowed to have a copy of the design until we signed the contract also.

We hope the infinity spa was worth the money.. we do live in a very windy area so not sure if we will ever get the true mirror effect with it or not.

Any criticisms or concerns with our design? Don't worry my feelings wont be hurt. I'm new to this and looking for any advice / suggestions even if it might be negative.

Welcome to TFP! This looks really cool for your space. Keep the pics coming and ask away on any questions you may have. I'm a newbie to TFP as well but I got excellent guidance as I went thru my build....

Infinity spas are beautiful, but they pose a problem. How do you get in and out of them? My spouse has compared the problem to getting into and out of a BMW X5 with running boards. (The running boards are not designed to be stepped on.) Such is the case with the trough on an infinity spa.

How wide is the trough around your infinity spa? The wider it is, the easier it is to step into. The more narrow it is, the easier it is to step over. I think wider is also better for water circulation. (Make sure there is a return on at least one of the outside corners.) Wider is also better if you want to light up the sides of the spa.

Furthermore, is your spa raised 6 inches? 18" is typical seating height. Though infinity spas are not designed for sitting, they are meant to be viewed at a distance. There is more to see if it is raised 12 or 18 inches.

Spa is contracted to have a 12" raised edge and be 12" wide with a slight slope, so no sitting on it for sure. However the inside of the spa is quite big I think at 7'x7'.

I've never measured but I would say the gap between the spa and the edge is 6" wide maybe? Looks pretty narrow on the designs.

That's a great design and use of space! A good size spa not to big and should heat fairly quickly. We thought about the infinity edge all around but I was worried about upkeep of the glass tile. So we went with a level edge and infinity like on one side.

I see deck jets on the one artist rendering. Be forewarned, they are pretty noisy. We put two in our pool and have used them twice for a couple minutes each. It is not pleasant if a group is on the patio and they are running.

Take care.

Welcome neighbor to TFP!!! This is an amazing site.

Confidentiality clause?? Nope, I've never heard of that. It sounds like they have some stiff competition near enough to worry them. Whom are you not supposed to tell? And since you asked if anyone can guess who the builder is, I can't. I had trouble finding my PB even with his name!!! But.... your question and the mention of the confidentiality clause makes me think of one builder off the Katy Fwy (I think). It was further out than I expected. Anyway, we had a bad experience there. I saw on the web that they had 3 small but real pools with different colors of finish. I couldn't wait to have a look. One pool was visible from the tiny parking lot. It was pitiful, not well kept. The other two were behind a fence. We went in to ask to see them. The saleswoman was extremely rude (we had been outside at a plant nursery, so not immaculately groomed). Anyway, she asked if we had signed a contract with them. I told her no, and she said we weren't allowed to see the pools. So we went back out, and I was going to take a picture of the pool outside the fence. She came out and stopped me, and said that wasn't allowed. She then escorted us to the car. I felt like a criminal. This was not a private residence. Needless to say, I'm glad I met her before calling for an interview. I just wonder if it was the same company. I quickly erased them from my memory to have more room for nicer things! Lol!!!

On TFP, listing the cost of your pool is up to each pool owner, and it seems most do not publish it except sometimes through a Private Message. Naming the builder is not allowed either except through a Private Message. In the past, there have been a battle or two between an unhappy Pool Owner and Pool Builder, because the build went south (in the PO's opinion). This isn't the place for that and not the purpose of TFP - teaching, guiding, and supporting Pool Owners.

I love your design! The left side somewhat follows the angle of the fence line. I've seen that done before, and I always think it looks great! I think you made an excellent decision to drop the three paver stones. To me it looks better and would have created more maintenance work, too. Pool water is beautiful all by itself, and doesn't need to be covered up.

I agree with LDV about the spa. If the infinity part increases the cost a good bit, it wouldn't be worth it for me. I think it might look cool the first couple of times, but I don't think I'd notice it much after that. I think of infinity edges for spaces with a gorgeous back drop where the pool seems to disappear into the scenery.

I will add to Mknauss's reply about the noise of the deck jets. I really wanted them, thinking we'd hear this nice little splat sound of water hitting the pool. Then my PB talked me out of them - he said they are the first water feature to go bad - they get clogged easily. He also said the slightest breeze ruins the graceful water arc. And they usually aren't free.

Have you ever had a wood deck? They can take a good deal of maintenance, and the wood gets very hot. I would go with a raised travertine deck with some elegant step(s) spanning 2 edges of the deck. The travertine will be much cooler so people sitting on the chairs or loungers won't have to wear flip flops due to the hot wood. Using the same material as the rest of the deck will make the entire area look larger. And my #1 reason for not using the wood deck.... if it's raised, snakes and other vile creatures love to hibernate or make their home under wood decks. (this suggestion would be over-ruled by the next if you were to choose the next one. hahaha!)

I love the water and love having a pool, so I would make the pool larger. Where the three paver stones are, I would widen that towards the house at least to the edge of the spa (house side edge of the spa), and push the spa down to almost the far edge of the wood deck going towards the fence. You've got some nice area to extend the travertine deck in the plan further towards the fence. That would add an open area to the patio under the sun and sky. That would be great for shaded times of the day and at night - a nice open feel. You'd still have a majority of deck that is covered. After all, what's a 'few' more dollars, right?! Lol! But consider the source for this suggestion.... I want every pool bigger (well, except for the 60k-90k gallon pools built on here!), and it's not MY money!!!

Your shallow end is 3'6", right? Many people on here have been glad they went with a 4' shallow end. Of course that depends on the height of the adults who will be using the pool the most. And I had a neighbor who never learned to swim, but the rest of the family wanted a pool. So their shallow end was 3.5 deep. Those things become very important when considering pool depth. I only mention it, because many PB's are still assuming 3.5 feet is the norm for shallow ends. I think that's changing.

I think Wet Edge is a great way to go. I have PebbleTec, and it does have a great reputation, but WetEdge seems to have so many more finish options and colors. Also, WetEdge seems to be very pro beads in their finishes which I think are beautiful.

I have a 6" Sun Shelf, and I absolutely love it!!! For me, it is the perfect depth. I can sit in an adirondack chair in my clothes and only cool off my feet without getting my clothes wet. I love that when I don't have time for a swim OR when it's warm here, but the pool is too cool to swim in. (late fall and early spring - even some of our Houston winter days) I think it stretches out the pool season in a way. But everyone loves their particular depths for different and excellent reasons. Thought I would share why I like 6".

I'm not a good source on pool equipment and the mechanics of a pool, but ask someone here about the skimmers. In the diagram, it shows two skimmers on the same wall. That may be the way to do it, I don't know. I'm curious why there isn't a skimmer on the wall across from the other two. (and have only one where there are two). Is it the prevailing wind direction? In my yard, the winds shift around with the seasons and storms. I would want a skimmer on the opposite walls to catch debris for different wind directions.

On the sun shelf: You will definitely want one or two returns for clearing debris off the shelf. I have one for my shelf, and it works great. I think my shelf is quite a bit smaller than yours. Another question for the experts here is lighting placement. I see two in the main part of the pool. (and a 3rd in the spa) I would think you need some sort of light on or pointing to the shelf.

Well, you asked for it, so you got it. I know my opinion is worth just about 2 cents, but maybe there's something you hadn't thought of before. Others will be along, and there will be more feedback to come after you can post the equipment list.

Take care! Hope after this post that you're still glad you came.....

Hey - I too am in katy and about to start dig shortly. Hopefully you got multiple builders to give quotes. Mine ranged from $70k to $96k. I went with the one on the middle that I felt was most responsive and reputable while providing the best value. Various builders have different way of pricing and types of materials so it was a bit challenging to put them all on a purely consistent basis. Here is a link to some details of what I'm building. Good Luck and hope all goes well!

Geometric gunite pool build in west Houston suburb

He's not on Katy Fwy, but instead on Cinco Ranch Blvd. I'm new here so I wasn't aware to not mention his name and prices etc so I apologize.

Our shallow end is 3'6". I personally would like 4' however my wife is short, 5'2", and wants a shallower pool. If it were my choice it would be 4'-6' instead of the 3'6"-5'6".

I've never had a wood deck and know it will probably require a significant amount of maintenance, but we really love the way it looks.. I don't know if doing travertine there would have the same feel we want. If money were no object I like your idea of moving everything a little further out and expanding the pool. Unfortunately we didn't win the lotto so this is about all we can afford. The pool currently has a 143' perimeter.

The deck jets again are a wife add on. I personally don't want them or need them but she does. We all know the saying "happy wife happy life" :)..

We have gotten multiple quotes from various builders. We in the end picked the second highest. The low bids just didn't have any "wow" factor and felt like a pool designed from the 80's.

I'm glad you aren't working with that outfit I met!!

No worries! You didn't mention any builder names. It was just a heads up...

I do think the wood deck is beautiful! Sometimes I get too practical, except when I think of pool size! Lol!! Then my practicality disappears. So welcome to the world most of us live in - choices driven by our budgets. If I won the lottery, I'd buy a big piece of land in the country and build a 40k gallon pool!!

You are a wise husband! Your wife will enjoy the deck jets. They are so pretty and look like fun. And as I mentioned, depths are a personal choice or need. Some people simply do what their builder says and don't consider other options.

Your builder definitely nailed the wow factor. I love your design!

I've never measured but I would say the gap between the spa and the edge is 6" wide maybe? Looks pretty narrow on the designs.

Have the builder stipulate the width and depth of the trough. The spa in your pictures above has a trough that is completely hidden. Most infinity (perimeter overflow) spas that are raised have a visible trough.

Some other things you should know. I assume you are going to cover the spa in glass tile. If so, you should know that glass tile spillways require more maintenance. Water (particularly still water) leaves all sorts of deposits. To minimize the deposits, pick a tile with an even surface or seal the tile periodically.

This is probably also a good time to start shopping around for tile. How much of a tile allowance is there in the contract? The most expensive pool tile is in the 40+ dollar range, but can usually be acquired by a designer/contractor for a trade discount.

We have a great TFP resource person if you are planning to use glass tile and have questions about quality, installation, and maintenance.

I haven't gotten to see what types of tile we will get to pick out yet. Once I see it I will post any questions here. Thanks for the assistance.

How much is all that going to cost? ;)

So far we are at 74,500. That doesn't include any fencing around the pool or landscaping/sprinkler repair.
