What causes CYA to rise?

It may just be a difference in conditions or user error, but my CYA has risen over 2 weeks from 30 to 40. I battled CYA in the past b/c of using the pucks. At the start of the season I drained part of the pool and refilled to get it back down and have only used bleach this season. Is there another reason it has risen? Just want to be aware if there is something I need to be on the lookout for so that I can easily manage. Thanks.

Things that add CYA:
- Pucks
- Bags of "Shock"
- Stabilizer

My guess is you tested under different lighting conditions making the two test differ. You want to have back to sun, with body shading the sample, put it waist high and look to see dot. If you do, fill up to next 10 increment and look again.

This is good advice, the filling to each increment before looking for the dot. For a long time I just kept adding drops until I couldn't see the dot anymore. The problem with this is once the eye trains itself to see that dot, you will way overshoot the solution to get it to disappear. Fill to each increment, then quickly glance to see the dot.

Plus, consider the margin for error on this test is a bit more than titration tests, so don't be too discouraged. If you see it go up to 50 next week, though, we might need to set you up a bottling operation selling your free source of liquid stabilizer! :)
