Thank you so much for this post - I have this exact same problem and all I could ever find was lots of posts saying, more or less, 'check the chemicals and don't forget to backwash', which is simply not helpful. The channel in the filter makes sense. This is almost certainly my problem too. Did you figure out a way to eliminate the channeling?
