Hi all,
Looking for some help. My pool is a simple, in-ground, rectangular 32X18, 16,500 gallons and about 4.5 ft at deepest section. Pump and filter are within 6 feet of pool and only one skimmer line. No heater or anything fancy. Sand filter is Sta-Rite S7S50. I have an old Hayward pump model C48k2n143b1. It is single speed, 1 HP, .75kw 115/230v, 56J. I inherited it from buyer two years ago but guessing it is pretty old. I still runs ok but I really want to upgrade to more efficient motor, maybe a two speed. I live in CT and pool season is only three months but our electric rates are through the roof about .18 -.19 per KW. Trying to keep costs down but really struggling to find a replacement motor. Here are my concerns:
-Whoever built the pool installed a 125v line so I can't do 230v pump without electrician coming in (which I really want to avoid at this point). It is one of those 3 prong twist outlets. No idea why he did it.
-So, this limits me to 115v pumps and I can't find any direct replacements that are two speed? The closest appears to be AO Smith B973 but my concern is that there is no switch to change the speed setting? How can you do it without a switch?
-Seems like I am forced to buy total new pump for $600-$700 or change electric line? Should I just suck it up and pay $1000 for variable speed?
Also, I see this pump - Pentair 340204, 1HP, 2 Speed, 115V, Self Priming, with a Diffuser. It says above ground use but a few reviews say that it can be used inground. My set-up is simple and equipment only a few feet from pool. It won't be pulling water through many feet of pipe. It even states in specs that you can pull up to 8 feet above water line. Am I missing something? Seems like great, cheap replacement at $250.
