I am wanting to put a cover over my pool equipment to protect it from the harsh sun we get here in the summer months. I am wondering if I need to cover just the pump motor or both the pump and filter? Do you have any recommendations on premade covers?

Too hot to cover it up. That pump generates a LOT of heat. Instead, build a small roof with open sides......that'll do it.
Echoing what Dave said, you want to avoid entrapping the pump in an enclosed space. Although the pump is water cooled, it still needs an ample supply of cool air.
This is sorta what I had in mind to kind of help keep the sun and elements off of the motor directly.

I would like to see what the feed back on that pump cover is. I was going to creat one as a 3 sided with plexiglass
