Main drain-Yes it is safe to take off BUT make sure to NOT drop them down the hole. Make sure the pump is off as well. Make sure to put it back on before you turn on the pump.
I can't stress enough to not be in the pool with the pump running and the drain covers off. Apparently it's possible to suck your intestines out through your rear-end (at least for younger folks it is). Really unsafe.
