How to tie pentair intelliflo 2VST running to Ecomatic ESC16

I inherited this pool setup. The past owner had the pump changed to the one mentioned above. The installer left the pump power and the ecomatic power tied together and removed the mechanical timer. Now the pump and Ecomatic are powered all the time. The Ecomatic manual explicitly states that the unit should only be operated when the pump is running...not full time.

Is there a simple way to have both operate at the same time? Or is it best to buy another manual timer, separate the powers, hook the Ecomatic to the manual timer and then try to synch the pump and manual timer to turn on at the same time?

Looking for creative solutions here if there are any.

What you said is the way most people do it.

They do make current sensors but I have not seen anything that can be used right off the shelf.
