question on how to measure the FC to make sure the level is high enough for shocking? The test kit i have only goes to 4 and the strips go to 10 but I heard they are not accurate.
You need a test kit that has the FAS-DPD chlorine test. It can test up to 50 ppm with a precison as great as .2 ppm and it's NOT a color matching test so there is NO ambiguity. This chlorine test can be found in the TF100 test kit (link in my sig) and in the Taylor K-2006 (NOT the K-2005) which is why we recommend these two test kits pool-school/pool_test_kit_comparison
Without good test results you really are just guessing!
